Crash while verifying boot options:   While cleaning up some boot definitions with SYS$MANAGER:BOOT_OPTIONS.COM ready to relocate the system disk from one EVA disk group to another, we experienced a crash. I'll wait:   OpenVMS 8.4 was released on 21st June for Alpha and Integrity platforms. 16 days later, the first Update patch is out for it. Oh, you don't see it in my patch feeds you say? Wait 'til I fix the missing release date problem that has come back with 8.4 patches. Needless to say, I won't be rushing to update my production servers any time soon. How much faster is FAST I/O?:   Quite some time ago, I was asked how much better FAST I/O is than say, accessing the data via reading blocks with $QIOW. I didn't know at the time, and if you've spent any time in this game, you'll know that "I don't know" is an unacceptable answer. The correct response is "I'll find out!". Porting again:   Recently, I've been engaged to do the technical direction on another OpenVMS Alpha to Integrity port. The first steps are always pretty similar: make the developers and the management team aware of the pitfalls, then emphasize that the majority of effort will be spent testing the ported application.
