SAN Reorganisation

Four months after I instigated a project to reorganize the fibrechannel fabrics at work, I finally got to complete the job today. It has been delay after delay (and a little reluctance on my part to do what I knew would be a very hard job).

I was certainly right about it being a hard job. When we originally put in the first fibrechannel switches, we only had five metre cables available. This meant that I had to put the switch cabinet in a very weird location. The worst part of it was that the hole in the raised floor ended up right under the middle of the cabinet instead of at the front or the back. This makes getting cables in and out of this cab a nightmare.

As the fabric grew, with both redundant fabrics in the same cabinet, there was no opportunity to rectify the situation. Now that we have the two fabrics in separate cabinets, I can shut down the old original cabinet and fix it. But today, to get to the two cabinets, it was no fun at all.
