I'll wait

OpenVMS 8.4 was released on 21st June for Alpha and Integrity platforms. 16 days later, the first Update patch is out for it. Oh, you don't see it in my patch feeds you say? Wait 'til I fix the missing release date problem that has come back with 8.4 patches.

Needless to say, I won't be rushing to update my production servers any time soon.

V8.4 was announced on 21st, official release date was 29th June 2010. I expect the media will start appearing in the mail soon.

I think the first UPDATE patch is like the ADDENDUM patch kit seen on some earlier releases - fixes that did not get done in time for the final build.

Next thing to look forward to is the NIGS Hardware Enablement patch in August so you can run VMS on one of those lovely new BL860 i2 blades.

Well, the update patch might be like an addendum patch, but things like Brian's kit signing stuff being in there are a pretty go indication of when the kit was put together.

System crash fixes also are a good indication that this is not just stuff that didn't make it into the final build. I mean, would you ship a final build then wait 16 days before informing your customers about potential system crash scenarios?
