Weekend Sabbatical

I'm just back from a weekend in San Francisco. I took Friday and Monday off so I could have a complete weekend in the city while the pager, phone, and computers remained in Sacramento.

The primary goal was to eat some good food, not a difficult thing to do in San Francisco. You can read a writeup on where I went, what was on the menu, and what my thoughts were on each place on my personal pages.

I spent a little time browsing in the large Barnes and Noble bookstore in North Beach. I came across a book by a couple of programmers called "The Pragmatic Programmer". When I realised I was reading the book and not browsing it, I bought it. And what a find. Every person that writes code should read this book.

The book contains a list of tips and anecdotes, which make facinating reading, primarily because these guys have written down stuff that agrees with the way that I do the job.

I can't recommend it highly enough, no matter what level of programming expertise you have.

Amusingly enough, the same thing happened to me.
Improved my knowledge on programming quite a bit, and made me realize that most of the sound ideas in this book are VERY hard to do in Java.
